EarthWorks Urban Garden: Tour 4:00pm-5:00pm

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen’s Earthworks Urban Farm seeks to build a just food system through education, inspiration, and community development. It is a working study in social justice and in knowing the origin of the food we eat.

The Capuchin Province of St. Joseph has a religious mission to live and work among the poor. Their Soup Kitchen, and other programs, have been helping the poor in Detroit since 1883. In 1997, Brother Rick Samyn, Capuchin friar, felt a calling to start a garden at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. That small plot of land grew into today’s urban farm project, harvesting 6,000 pounds of produce for Detroit’s hungry. Projects and partners include the Wayne County Department of Health, Project FRESH (with WIC, Women, Infants and Children), Gleaners Community Food Bank, Growing Healthy Kids, Youth Farm Stand and the Garden Resource Program Collaborative.

Parker Street Market: Reception and Refreshments 5:15pm-6:15pm

Parker Street Market is the newest addition to the enterprises sprouting in West Village. This “organic bodega” offers an array of produce, a counter of prepared foods, fresh coffee and a selection of locally-produced foodstuffs. Parker Street Market is the brainchild of David Kirby, co-owner of Drought, the local juice company.

The reception will include a sampling of organic gluten-free cookies and wine.
