Seventh Annual Daffodil Luncheon
Wednesday, April 19, 2017, 10:00am-2:00pm
Detroit Yacht Club

As spring comes, so do daffodils. We are busy making plans for the 2017 Daffodil Day Luncheon. This year we get back to our roots with Jenny Rose Carey, director of Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Meadowbrook Farm, as our speaker.

Jenny Rose Carey is well know as a horticultural educator and author. At Temple University Amble, she was a professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture & Horticulture and director of the Ambler Arboretum. Jenny has lectured around the world on a range of topics, including gardens of the Jazz Age, women in gardening history, herb and shade gardens. We are sure you will enjoy her talk on the History of Women Horticulturalist and Landscapers: the Golden Age.

One hundred thousand new bulbs were planted last autumn! If the weather cooperates, we should be greeted by glorious golden blooms. The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and the Belle Isle Aquarium will be open and staffed by docents. A new stop this year is the US Coast Guard base on Belle Isle. Rarely open the public, this a special opportunity to meet the men and women who protect the watery borders of the United States.

At the Detroit Yacht Club, proceed to the Grand Ballroom. In the lobby, fashionably clad models from the Peacock Room, known for unique women’s clothing, will be strolling about. Clothing and accessories will be for sale with 10% of every purchase donated for daffodils. An information table will provide news about what is happening at other branches. Also, a cash bar will be available.

An updated Daffodil Day tile will available in a new color, tree frog green. The 4”x8” tile is available for pre-order at $50. A limited quantity of tiles, plus daffodil notecards, will be available the day of the luncheon.

The luncheon will bring to mind of old Detroit with a Maurice salad, just like Hudson’s used to have, and Vernors ginger ale. Rolls and butter, coffee and tea and a lemon mousse dessert will complete the meal. A vegetarian option is available.
